We’re Breaking Tradition—Big Time

You’ll come to find it emphasized in our ceremony quite a lot, but we’re big on partnership. We approach our relationship as equals. It didn’t feel right having one person take the other’s last name. Hyphenation also didn’t make sense for us. We wanted a family name we could share together—so we created one.

Our Favorite Word For Each Other

We had many conversations about what our last name would be. When we arrived at creating our own, we wanted a surname the was strong, meaningful and shared. If you know us well, our pet name for one another is Kookaburra and we have a bunch of other nicknames that spin off from that.

We started calling one another Kookaburra because of the nursery rhyme. Whenever Dominique would struggle to fall asleep Cody would sing it to her. We use kookaburra as the sweetest word to express our love and adoration for one another.

Kookaburra also happens to be the name for an Australian bird. We have more affinity for the word than the animal. 😝

Why Baira?

Baira is derived from the burra in Kookaburra. It also means Brave in Sanskrit and we happen to think we’re pretty brave for breaking tradition. We tried a number of different spellings—Barra, Bara, Berra—and ultimately arrived at Baira because it was most likely to be pronounced correctly and a quick google search revealed barely anyone had it as a last name unless you count Yogi Berra (same pronunciation, different spelling) 😉.

Soon To Be Mr. + Mrs. Baira
